SKIP&DIE

Dub with digital cumbia, kwaito with ghettotech rap, punk with baile funk and afrofuturistic beats

”Ever since the release of their debut album “Riots in the Jungle” (which came out in October 2012), the sensational genre-blending band formed by South African vocalist & visual artist Catarina Aimée Dahms (aka Cata.Pirata) and Dutch musician & producer Jori Collignon have been wowing the crowds all around Europe, with their dynamic fusion of electronic dance music, tropical bass, ragga, hip hop and everything in between.

“Riots in the Jungle” was written by Cata.Pirata and Jori while they travelled through South Africa’s Soweto, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gugulethu, collaborating along the way with some of SA’s most inspiring music makers on the rise. The album portrays their experience of blazing sun, dusty roads, township shacks, cockroaches, skulls, bones and lovebirds. It contains songs in English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu, Spanish and Portuguese.

After having surprised the world with their provocative video “Love Jihad” (directed by Cata.Pirata who is also an innovative art performer and film director), SKIP&DIE took Europe by storm with their live performances.

The live band has grown into a tight and vibrant group featuring Jori Collignon (percussion, synths), Daniel Rose (sitar, guitar, saz), Gino Bombrini (percussion) and Cata.Pirata’s vocals and phenomenal stage presence. Thanks to the group’s relentless energy, SKIP&DIE was the highlight of the famous French festival Les Transmusicales de Rennes in December 2012 and went on to conquer the biggest stages and festivals in Europe: Eurosonic, The Great Escape, Les Femmes s’en mêlent, Le Printemps de Bourges, Where The Wild Things Are, Amsterdam Dance Event, Art Rock and Europavox, to name but a few. Summer 2013 festivals included Sonar (ES), Solidays and Vieilles Charrues (FR), Parkpop (NL), Paléo (CH), Pohoda (SK), Esperanzah & Les Ardentes (BE), Sziget (HU) and many more.

After setting fire to stages all around the world for three years, SKIP&DIE released their second album, ‘’Cosmic Serpents’’, in 2015. The album was written and recorded on the road in Brazil, Egypt, Argentina, Colombia, La Réunion, South Africa, Portugal and the Netherlands. The result is an album with global music, irresistible rhythms and beats, acoustic instruments, field recordings and spacey synths. With its re-imagining of global music, irresistible rhythms and beats, acoustic instruments, field recordings and spacey synths, Cosmic Serpents reveals a poetic sonic collage that toys with ideas of transient life, looming death, a shift in consciousness, and the notion that our collective DNA coils throughout eternity like a cosmic serpent.
